yes, you've already checked all that should be checked and you've done more enough all that is left is just that, get in touch with your isp and complain about this issue to them. it's still interesting to hear what came out from the mtr from your end but on the server end this is what comes out:

Code: Select all

Start: 2020-10-24T14:22:34+0200
HOST: unfreeze.fpsclasico.de Loss% Snt Last Avg Best Wrst StDev

as can be seen the +300 ms lags are taking place on last endpoint hop, 31.176.248.1, which I suppose it's a internal intermediate router of your isp. it's also very telling to me the fact I see a clear relation between lag and the time at what you play. I mean, from what I saw on the mornings (when your isp pressure is probably low) you seem to have "little" problems while on the evenings (when your isp pressure is probably at its peak) you literally couldn't even connect. unfortunately if that's the case, which seems to be as you also lagged from your phone connection (same isp) probably because it goes through the same internal intermediate nodes, this has little to no solution so complain to your isp about low/unplayable quality while playing but don't press much further as it's unlikely to result in any solution at the time being/short term. last, the fact that this just surfaced a few months ago when it coincided with a server change (a big time server upgrade btw) is probably just that, a mere coincidence. I've still continued to double/triple check the server connectivity while following this issue and I'm yet to find one problem that is to blame on either the server itself (configuration included) or the server's hosting company.

anyways I'm extraordinarily sorry that you've had a poor experience playing here.

btw also on a side note here I checked your isp offerings now and I found some really, really limited plans, some even as low as old legacy low end 128/64 kbps offers. from what I saw I can tell you that probably anything bellow a "NET FLAT 10" (on fixed line, xDSL) plan isn't gonna work and even so, I'm not entirely sure as there seem to be a worrying note stating "neograničeno korištenje na fer osnovi" (unlimited use on a fair basis which directly suggests the kind of throttling I was talking about on my first answer) but apparently in no place makes clear what this fair use policy consists in. on this line in addition to check the mtr it would also be interesting to drop by speedtest.net (for example or any other speed test site of your choice) at peak times (ex. 21:00 CEST) and see what values of bandwidth you're really getting, specially on the upload direction.

You're right about what you said. My playing experience here is pretty enjoyable, but it's this issue that's really annoying me. I have the NET FLAT 10, but honestly, I'm not impressed by the offer. I wanted to switch the ISP to a different one, and have 5 times faster speeds. I have some deals that I need to wait to be finished, before switching. At the peak hours values of bandwidth are lower and there's no doubt. You're right about what you said. The values of the bandwidth are much better in the mornings. I'm not entirely sure what to request from them any further — replacement of the router, try pressure them to enhance the value of my bandwidth (which I already did and they've actually done something but yet it's insignificant)... I tried to play 30 minutes ago, and it was impossible. I switched to a different game, and I could play fine enough, but with minor lags. My current ISP is terrible, and I am waiting for the opportunity to switch to the other one while searching for ways to improve current the values I'm getting at the moment. They're incompetent. :(

I have something interesting to say. I have two routers that share the same connection (I think it's bridge connection). So, I swapped to the other router, and I don't have ANY lag. :D

I played for 30 minutes, and I didn't get a single "connection interrupted". I'll test this further (tomorrow hopefully) and see if I face the issue again, this time on the other router. Interesting...

mmmm I don't know, as I said, unfortunately I don't really know at the moment of any other players from your location/isp for comparison to rule out that so, sure, make sure that you aren't looping them or something. make it simple, phone jack<->rj-11<->modem(<->rj-45<->router this is typically included on the modem nowadays)<->rj-45(or WiFi)<->computer and don't even plug absolutely anything else. don't start throwing switches or other routers in between (not at least to rule out that by now) or other fallback isdn/mobile connections and even if your modem is old and it doesn't come with a router included you can even plug your pc directly to it (this last should be best). last for "canonical" tests to rule out issues on your internal home network make sure to plug your modem (the rj-11) to the Network Test and Termination Point (typically on a box at the entry of the line on your house) instead of a middle house phone jack.

btw I don't know what values you're getting on your end but I've kept monitoring this issue and from what I could trace from your isp after the previous reported trace saturation I have no found any other connectivity issues so far as can be seen:

in fact, they even look like pretty solid values for your region. 109.175.80.1 is gonna be your first isp hop, so at this point after +48 hours of monitoring I don't even observe any problems with your isp. yes, today apparently as can be seen on the traces in one of the routes for about half a hour around 18:15 CET there was a +10 ms ping increase on some of the transit nodes as well as the other day some saturation also for some minutes on the previous trace. but well as I explained those are just normal inconveniences of the public internet and definitively nothing to blame your isp and/or fpsclasico for (and btw this is also a very good example of why two different routes are always offered at all times).

in addition in the couple of hours that you played here today I monitored you and even at peak times I also did not find any major issues of significance there either. yes, there was some ping spikes here and there but for the most part the connection was stable and this time the packets arrived on time, all of them, there was no packet loss and so they were delivered. honestly, you can't realistically expect much more beyond all this from your connection. I don't know if you got it sorted it or not at your home and that was really the problem, unfortunately I dug the last months of database and as I recalled from memory no other players from your location/isp came out for comparison to rule out that, but at the time being I don't observe any issues here.

Thanks for the in-depth explanation. Something unusual is going on, but I'll see what I can do with this specific issue. I appreciate your help. :D

ok no problem, just in case I also looked up your server history now for comparison and as far as I could see you've only really played here regularly during the past month of June of 2020. during that month you got a ping average of 45.78 ms with a standard deviation of 14.84 ms while this month you've been doing a average ping of 51.08 ms at a standard deviation of 15.32 ms so far. yes sure, the current on going month ping average is definitively higher than the previous well-known value, but, that figure is largely influenced by the connectivity issues you experienced past days. however it's very telling that the ping standard deviation it's pretty much about the same and even back then, 14.84 ms, was a, yet acceptable, but also relatively high value at the same time. that shows that even back then your connection wasn't exactly 100% stable by any means and you still had significant ping spikes nevertheless. for the rest, let me know if you still require any more traces, but I can tell you that after +72 hours of monitoring I haven't really identified any connectivity issues of significance on your isp end. to be honest overall this seems to be what reasonably to expect from their suggested "NET FLAT 10" plan, I don't really see nothing wrong here. keep in mind that the offered bandwidth values are on the nttp only not on every end-point computer/terminal. you mentioned you were also running other computers, make also sure they aren't eating up the connection while you're gaming as well as simplify your home network, at least for testing.

other than that just to be safe I also measured and analyzed historic overall server values now. apparently UnFreeZe(1) June 2020 average ping was 47.12 ms with a standard deviation of 35.19 ms while this month has been 48.12 ms with a standard deviation of 36.04 ms so far. the values for FreeFUn (i.e. UnFreeZe2) were 45.08 ms of average ping with a standard deviation of 32.22 ms back in June 2020 and this month so far are at 44.34 ms with a standard deviation of 34.04 ms. any potential difference on those values is clearly statistically irrelevant and the fact that UnFreeZe1 values are slightly higher than on UnFreeZe2 only tells that UnFreeZe1, as being the primary number one server, is more likely to have overseas players (i.e. high pingers), nothing else. on this line, just for comparison, current month spacius (where is very very rare to see overseas players) values are 40.89 ms of average ping with a standard deviation of 38.59 ms so far. the higher (in comparison) standard deviation at spacius is easily explained because of the lower (again in comparison) number of samples.

note that those figures are taken, literally, from thousands of different unique players thus as can be seen I think that this should make it completely clear that at fpsclasico there haven't been such difference in connectivity quality between the last time you consistently played here (June 2020) and "last months" (i.e. this on-going October of 2020 month).

I've discovered what the issue is. I have a wireless USB adapter: TL-WN721N V1

and I use this to connect to the internet. Now I switched to my ethernet cabal, and connected it to my router - all the lag is gone, literally.
Now I don't want to drill more holes throughout the house to connect my ethernet cabal with the router since this is a "new PC", I use this USB adapter, which is creating problems in quake.

I tested these two in the past and I had similar internet speed. I haven't tried to pinpoint what's creating the exact problem... So I will probably need to buy another new wireless adapter.

Fun story - I've encountered the BSOD while I was playing quake earlier today, because of the "Connection Interrupted" issue (kernel security check failure). Now while I was testing these two, when I had removed the wireless adapter I faced the BSOD again.

Interesting thing is that this doesn't happen in Quake Live.

I have checked my drivers, my hard disks... they seem to be fine. It's probably this USB adapter that's creating the problem.

I kind of assumed this was the issue because I literally installed new OS (freshly), changed my router and even boosted my internet.

I don't know what to do right now, but I should probably fancy buying a new wireless usb adapter. I guess. I know how silly it sounds.

don't know, that should work, I mean as I told you before, any standard approved test procedure involves, nttp->rj-11->modem->rj-45->computer, if that works (that apparently it does) then the problem is responsibility of the client. however that being said, while the wi-fi won't be perfect provided that it's relatively close (i.e. either on the room or one small room away) it should be at least "playable", I mean, it shouldn't "hang"/lag just that bad, that's definitively not "normal" either. so I don't know either, but if the problem is on the wi-fi things to try is to set the wi-fi channel on the router to a fixed channel, instead of automatic, and probably also lock it to only b/g. that's what I would try, you appear to have a N capable card, wi-fi N rarely bring much benefices, particularly for a 10 mbit dsl line, and it's known to cause incompatibilities and suffer stability issues so I'd give a try to stick only to b/g wi-fi (i.e. 12/54 mbit wifi and let alone 150 mbit wi-fi N).
